Filmmakers have the power to tell stories to many different audiences. They have the ability to teach, to educate, to stir emotions and to inspire people.
Film is an art form, an education tool, and a vehicle for social change. Filmmakers have a wonderful ability to make us laugh, cry and think. They have the power to create a movement towards a healthier world and healthier communities.
There are a few film festivals in different parts of the world that discovered the power of films in promoting a healthier world.
The World Health Organization in their inaugural Film Festival scheduled for May 2020. They had already received 1265 film / documentary submissions from 119 countries:
• Health-care in remote areas and countries in conflict
• The realities of living and battling cancer
• The courage and resilience of nurses and midwives in the face of the most challenging of circumstances all over the world.
Global Health Film
It is a London based film festival that attracts around 500 attendants every year and is growing. The films address multiple global health issues and among the attendants are filmmakers, health advocates, journalists, public health workers and the public in general.
American Public Health Film Festival
About twenty thousand attendants gather for this annual meeting. Among them are public health professionals, doctors, nurses, community health workers, health advocates, community organizations, and also includes the private sector. The film festival is part of a larger program. The topics addressed by the films go from health access, chronic diseases, infectious disease, caring for loved one, how to deal with mental health issues, and many other topics. There are a truly large variety of themes.
Filmmakers have the unique gift to bring these stories to life through their power storytelling gift. The goal of the filmmaker is to entertain, and at the same time to educate, inspire and encourage change for a healthier future.
